St. John’s Lutheran Church in Knoxville had been coal
heated. A thick layer of soot had collected on and
between the two and three layers of glass on their
windows. In July 2004, we removed the Good Shepherd
window; completely dismantled it; cleaned each piece of
glass; glued broken pieces with a UV glass epoxy; then
rebuilt the windows. We installed them back into their
original frames using the original trim. Next we will
remove the protective glazing; scrape and paint the
exterior of the frames; then install new protective
glazing. We will restore each window one at a time
until all the windows are restored. This is a full
restoration. Once restored, the windows will last
another 75 to 100 years.
As of 2009, we have restored the four windows on the exterior of the building shown below. We have also restored the Ascension window behind the altar which is a very large light box illuminated by a skylight. We painted the interior of the light box which is actually a stairwell. We replaced the glass at the top of the stair well. There are four more sanctuary windows that are between a corridor and the sanctuary. We hope to restore those windows too.
